Movie List

I have a hard time watching movies because I get easily frustrated if, after two hours of precious time, it turns out to be a dud!
I know a lot of us feel this way so I want this space to be dedicated to good films we've recently seen and what we think about them! Feel free to post ideas and your own 1-3 sentence review, thought, whatever! You know. . . like the quotes in the back of the books or dvd covers :)

Also, feel free to post the dud movies that aren't worth the time or $ you've recently seen! This is just as helpful as the suggestions for all of us! It's okay if you're feeling in the middle about it- share! We all have different opinions about what we like or don't.

There Be Dragons (2011)
Read my post here.
127 Hours (2010)

The King's Speech (2010)

The Young Victoria (2009)
Loved this clean, genuine, (even pro-life) historical romance! Don't expect Austen-esque step-by-step development, but enjoy it for its simplicity and great tribute to the reality (sacrifices!) as well as beauty of marriage. More here.

Toy Story 3 (2010)
Funniest movie I've seen in a long time. I think so far Toy Story is the ONLY recent movie that has made sequels worth the wait and worth watching where your expectations are always surpassed. These writers are geniuses. A MUST SEE for everyone, and definitely worth paying to watch it in the theater! I laughed harder than anyone in the theater, according to my husband. I had TEARS!
Leap Year (2010)
I loved it! It's based on Frank Capra's It Happened One Night, though try not to think of the comparison too hard or it'll ruin the movie! It was super enjoyable, hilarious at parts, and totally clean! Chick Flick Seal of Approval from me!

The Blind Side (2009)

Sandra Bullock is great in this one! Honestly very inspiring and I loved that it is based on a true story. This is more of the background story- not really about the actual game, which I liked.
Up in the Air (2009)
I'm on the fence about this one. It started off well and was building well- I particularly liked that the young recent graduate with the new, big job was rooted and defended her position of her higher goal: being a stay at home mom and the permanence of marriage. . . but somewhere in there hers and Clooney's character development, which had been progressing, was just left. .. up in the air. . . It seems like they decided to wrap it up all of a sudden leaving much unsaid and unresolved after so much build up.. . I wouldn't recommend it as a quality film, but it does have lots of room for discussion.
The Princess and the Frog (2009)

Hilarious!- especially the exaggeration of the Cajun culture, but I don't think it's for young kids because of the voodoo theme that unfortunately was throughout the movie.I think some of those scenes might be too scary or disturbing.
Emma (2010)
I loved this! It was very true to Jane Austen's novel. It premiered on the BBC as a mini-series. If anyone knows where we can find it either online, etc, please share for those who missed it! You can see my full thoughts on my post here.
Sense & Sensibility (2008)
Another great rendition. It's a newer BBC mini-series made into a film that is very true to the book and its characters. There's only a few minor adaptations, but overall very well done and enjoyable. It goes by fast, I think! Careful of the first scene, especially with a young audience- a little shocking and unnecessary, I think, especially since it's not even part of the book!

(Heelllp me! There's so many good movies I haven't seen!So far friends have suggested mandated I see the following:)

Gone with the Wind

  1. Hmm Solomon Kane...I don't know what to make of it....it deals with heaven and hell on a purely Christian basis, which allows the makers of the movie to get very creative since the imagery in the Bible is very vivid. However, the acting is pretty sub par.

The movie does sport some pretty good one liners. Despairing at apparently being abandoned by God and forced back into a life of violence, Solomon turns his eyes skyward and says "is this all I am to you?....fine, so be it" brining his gaze back to his attackers he says "if protecting, these people means I am bound for hell...then that is a price I am willing to pay" SPOILER ALERT...as it turns out, it is by protecting his companions that solomon kane earns forgiveness for his past wrongs

not a movie for younger viewers, it has some very intense violence, the makers of this movie don't gild the lilly, when someone gets stabbed....they die! including 12 year old boys!!!!

  2. Movie: Up

this is a movie for all ages and provides great messages to walk away with.I don't know anyone who has seen this movie and does not like it

The overarching theme for this movie is senior citizen Carl Frederickson love for his now deceased wife.

the movie in a quiet way, promotes marriage and the love between husband and wife. At times, the movie can cause one's eyes to well up. It also makes a very subtle display of the impacts of divorce on children. Karl, Mr Frederickson's off-sider, comes from a broken family and at various points of the movie talks about how he misses his dad

    a definate must see

  3. you might be asking yourself "why is is this Raph guy posting so many coments?" the short answer is Mariana asked me to help out with her movie list and I looooooove movies.

Movie: Ali and I Am Legend, both staring Will Smith. I was going to do 2 posts for this but since Smith is the star of both of these movies I thought I'd put them in together just to show off his acting talent

    Ali

Before I watched this movie, Muhammed Ali was just a great boxer to me and that was all. After watching this movie, I went and downloaded all of this fights to my laptop. Muhammed Ali was also a great social activist and Will Smith does a fantastic job of portraying him (Will even changed the way he spoke so he would sound more like Ali in the movie).

The movie really captures Ali's struggles with overcoming racism and his subsequent ban from being a boxer and shows the strength of Muhammeds internal character. There are no holds barred, the movie also shows his flaws: I had no idea Ali was such a womanizer!!!

On the whole, an inspiring movie

    I Am Legend

from boxing and social icon to military scientist (who would have thought) I Am Legend is one of those movie's that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It is very intense and not one for younger viewers.

Smith plays a survivor of a virus that has killed 90% of the worlds population and turned 8% into crazed flesh eating zombies.

What makes this movie so different from any other zombie movie is how the effects of being the only discernably living human left on the planet are portrayed. Smith literally resorts to talking to mannequins to prevent himself from going crazy.

on the whole, it is a great movie and well worth watching

  4. one last post before I go to bed

    MOVIES TO AVOID

    #1 Burn after reading

    Reason: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    #2 My Bloody Valentine

Reason: Unbelievably unnecessary graphic sex scene in the first 5 minutes of the movie ensures for a quick dash for the exit.

#3 any movie that stars jennifer lopez or will ferrel

reason: its jennifer lopez and will ferrel, what other reason could you possibly need

the wedding planner is the only lopez movie you could watch without feeling the need to committ seppuku and if you can stand bizarre humour anchor man is quite funny

off to bed now...more movie reviews will come tomorrow

  7. I prefer movies that are practical and informative. For example, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, etc.

Learning about zombies and and how to protect yourself and your family from a post-apocalyptic onslaught from hordes of zombies can be very useful knowledge to have! :-)
